It’s not an evening attire, but has the cleavage of a ball gown. It’s not a mourning attire, but borrows some of those aesthetics. It borrows from several sources, to the point where Christine just seems confused. So this is probably the issue I have with Emmy Rossum’s Mausoleum dress. Think Emmy Rossum’s “Sissi” dress in “Think of Me”, or her pink Masquerade gown. They would also be over-the-top decorated, larger than life. Evening gowns did however allow a LOT of cleavage and arms. Daytime attires were expected to cover arms and cleavage. Some of these rules applied for non-mourning people as well - during daytime. Especially cleavage, but also arms, and God-forbid, ancles. It was reserved for more serious business. So using the black-and-purple mix as fashion colours in the Victorian and Edwardian era is a big faux-pas. (Left: half-mourning, 1855-65, Right: last of half-mourning, ca. These dresses shows “half mourning” and “finishing up mourning” in practice: Many would finish the mourning period with light purple or pink. (not to mention that her stage performaces and stage costumes would totally not be in sync with what one in mourning could allow herself).Ī young girl would mourn a dead parent for a year, maybe more (depending on decade, location and class), and in this period she would wear non-reflective all black for around half a year, and then mix in purple with the black to show she’s in half mourning (and also signalling to possible suitors that she’d soon be on the market). It would rather be a private choice of hers to express sorrow at this point. It’s black, she’s at the graveyard, but TECHNICALLY Christine would not be in mourning so many years later. I do however think that her dress is not a traditional moutning attire. A mourning dress would definitely not show cleavage like that.
